Project Description: The School of Life Science and Technology was jointly established by Shanghai Jiao Tong University and the Shanghai Branch of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in February 1997. All the teachers and students of the college have been adhering to the spirit and boldness of "being the first to dare" of Jiaotong University. Guided by the college culture of "cultivating virtue and love, improving oneself and benefiting others, strengthening the team and harmonizing the community, gathering specialties and excellence", over the past two decades, they have gone through a development process from nothing to something and from weak to strong. In the fourth round of national first-level discipline evaluation in 2016, biology ranked among the first echelon. In 2017, biology was included in the list of "Double First-Class" construction disciplines, and a new first-level discipline doctoral program in bioengineering was approved for construction. The college has blazed a trail of leapfrog development in life sciences with the characteristics of "Jiaotong University".

The college currently has five departments, namely the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, the Department of Genetics and Developmental Sciences, the Department of Microbial Sciences, the Department of Bioinformatics and Biostatistics, and the Department of Bioengineering. It also has a Life Science Experimental Teaching Center and the Shanghai Jiao Tong University Bio-X Research Institute. The college houses multiple key laboratories and research platforms, including the State Key Laboratory of Microbial Metabolism, the Key Laboratory of Genetics, Development and Mental and Neurological Diseases of the Ministry of Education, the International Joint Laboratory of Metabolism and Developmental Sciences of the Ministry of Education, the National Center for Verification and Testing of Molecular Characteristics of Genetically Modified Organisms of the Ministry of Agriculture, and the Shanghai Professional Technical Service Platform for Genetically Modified Organisms and Food Safety.
